The Uktena is a powerful, fearsome horned serpent from Cherokee mythology, a dragon-like creature with shining scales, horns, and a blazing crystal (Ulunsuti) on its forehead, often associated with water, storms, and death, whose breath and dazzling light are lethal, yet its crystal holds immense power for medicine people who can obtain it, often through perilous quests.

- Appearance: A giant snake, as large as a tree trunk, with horns, a blazing crest (crystal) between its eyes, and shimmering, fire-like scales.
- Habitat: Lives in deep water sources like rivers and lakes, often in lonely mountain passes.
- Powers: Its breath is deadly; its crystal emits a light that mesmerizes and draws people to their doom; it causes storms.
- Weakness: Can only be killed by striking the seventh spot from its head, where its heart and life reside, with a special arrow.

- Aganunitsi: A famous story tells of the warrior Aganunitsi, who sought the Uktena's Ulunsuti crystal to gain power, encountering monstrous creatures created by the Uktena's proximity before finally confronting the beast.
- The Crystal: The Uktena's forehead crystal, the Ulunsuti, is incredibly potent but requires a blood sacrifice to remain calm; otherwise, it becomes a fiery ball seeking victims.
- Creation/Origin: In some tales, the Little People (a race of sprites) created the Uktena to test humanity, sending it to spread sickness, but it failed, leading to its banishment.
